How to make your wardrobe work for you with separates

I am very fortunate to be going away in a few days and am in the process of deciding which clothes to take with me. We are unsure what the weather is going to be and so I am taking a mixture of warm and cool items that I can layer. Separates are a good option when packing as you can make more outfits.  Here are my tips on how to make your wardrobe work for you with separates.

It is always nice to go away with a few new items. When I look back at my holiday photos I always seem to be wearing the same dress as I always pack my favourites. I have bought a Midi Skirt which on me is not too long in a lovely floral pattern from Oasis. What I liked about it was the movement with the splits at the side. It is also button through so you can be as daring as you like. With this pattern on the material it is ideal for packing as it does not crease. This retails at £34.00.

When buying a floral pattern if you are a petite lady never go for a large print as this will swamp you. This also works the other way, if you have a larger frame go for a larger print.

This print also came in a Bardot Top at Oasis and is worn off the shoulder. Worn together they look like a dress. This retails at £28.00. (I had the bonus of 25% off that day too). The beauty of these two purchases is that they look great worn together as a dress, but they can also be worn separately. The skirt I am going to wear with a red blouse, navy t/shirt and a cream top. The top on the other hand looks great with jeans, and my white cropped trousers. So, as you can see you can make many items.

A must for your holiday wardrobe is a pair of either white jeans or trousers or if you prefer cream. These you can team with so many different t/shirts, tops and blouses to get several different looks. If your holiday requires you to be more formal a pair of dark wide leg trousers are a safe option which you can dress up or down.

Separates are also a great way to layer your clothes, especially if you don’t know what the weather is going to be. A look that I love to wear, is a t/shirt or vest top with a button through cardigan worn over the top. I have collected several of these cardigans over the years in many different colours. They work better than a jumper as they can be worn undone too.

Change the look with Accessories

You can change the look of an outfit by the accessories you choose to wear. As many of you know I am a great lover of scarves as they add colour to an outfit. They can be tied in so many ways to add style. Fashion jewellery too can bring a plain top life and bracelets and bangles work well too. Sometimes, just by adding a belt to bring in your waist can make a huge difference.

My Challenge to you

Have a look at some of the items in your wardrobe and try wearing them with different pieces to which you usually wear. I posted some pictures on my Instagram and Facebook page yesterday of the models in John Lewis. They had teamed red trousers with a yellow t/shirt. Are they colours that you would put together? Have a play with what you have and see if you can come up with some new outfits that you have not worn together before. Let me know h
