Separates are good wardrobe staples and are known today as “Co-ords” and are a great way to build a capsule wardrobe. They work well when you are going on holiday. Separates can give you more outfits with fewer clothes

Take this outfit here a midi skirt with an off the shoulder top and worn together make a dress. What I liked about the skirt was the movement with the splits at the side. It is also button through so you can be as daring as you like. The top is worn off the shoulder and with this pattern on the material it is ideal for packing as it does not crease.

They look great worn together as a dress, but they can also be worn separately. The skirt I am going to wear with a red blouse, navy t/shirt and a cream top. The top on the other hand looks great with jeans, and my white cropped trousers. So, as you can see you can make many items

Separates or co-ords, are also a great way to layer your clothes, especially if you do not know what the weather is going to be. A look that I love to wear, is a t/shirt or vest top with a button through cardigan worn over the top. I have collected several of these cardigans over the years in many different colours. They work better than a jumper as they can be worn undone too. A traditional shirt can be worn the same way if the weather is warmer.

“Never buy anything new that you do not have three things in your wardrobe to wear with it”

The above rule is a good one to stick too, there is no point in buying something that you have nothing in your wardrobe to wear with it. The idea here is to build a wardrobe of clothes that you love and love wearing. You want your clothes to work for you, and for them to do that you need to have several ways to wear one item. A blouse or top should go with several bottoms, skirts, trousers and jeans and the other way around.

Most women wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time

So, what are all these unworn clothes

  • Usually they are items that you have nothing to wear with them.
  • Clothes in the wrong style of colour for you
  • You have had them in your wardrobe for a long time and you are fed of wearing them.
  • They no longer fit or need repairing.

Perhaps now is the time to look at sustainable fashion

If you have clothes that fit in to one of the above perhaps it time to pass them on. I think that most women have more clothes than they need and this time in lock down has proved that to me. Perhaps, if we were to all have less clothes, that we wear more often, we could afford to buy a better quality. These clothes will last longer and are less likely to find their way to landfill.
