What dress size are you? – Does it matter anyway?

What is in a number anyway? I am always surprised why ladies get hung up about the dress size. If something fits you and looks good does it matter what size it is. What dress size are you?  – Does it matter anyway?

What dress size are you? – Does it matter anyway?

I worked in Wallis for a few years part-time and loved working in the fitting room and advising ladies what to try on. I used to take items into the fitting room for them to try on. Sometimes these items would not necessary be things they would have chosen for themselves. That was the fun asking them to try things they may not have chosen themselves. The number of times ladies wanted to get into a certain size regardless, of how it looked. By choosing a larger size sometimes the dress will hang better, not cling around the tummy area. Also, it often makes the person look slimmer in the larger size.

I am a standard size 12 and I have been that size for as long as I can remember. So, how is it that I have sizes 10, 12, 14, & 16 in my wardrobe. Many retailers now have their clothes made abroad which makes a difference. Some of the cheaper retailers cut corners on fabric which often means you need to go up a size. So where does that leave us the customer?

Confused about the sizing these days?

I used to be able to go into a store and pick up a size 12 and knew it would fit, not anymore. Take this dress here. I was looking for something to wear to my daughters Graduation. I wanted something warm as it is in Canterbury Cathedral. I found this navy knitted dress in Warehouse. I nearly didn’t try it on as it was a size 16 but it did look small for a 16.  Guess what it fitted perfectly. The assistant said to me, well you must try things on these days!!  That’s all very well but how does that work with online shopping. Order it in every size?

Does size label really matter?

As many of you know, I love to buy a bargain.  Now that the sales are coming to an end there is not so much choice, but larger discounts.  My friend and I were shopping, and she spotted this red jacket. It was a size 14 and guess what it? it was too small, I asked if they had any more and to my amazement they did and here is my jacket in a size 16. Now either, it is just cut small, or someone is trying to tell me something.

So, the moral of the tale is, not to take any notice of the size label.  Cut it out if it helps. If the items fit well and looks good, makes you feel good then go for it. Sizing seems to not even be a guide these days, so my advice it not to get hung up about sizes and just try on!!

  1. Enjoyed your ‘size’ blog. I was ‘people watching’ the other day and I noticed several slim ladies whose dresses were creased through (a) being a size too small and (b) not wearing a slip.

    1. Yes it is so important to get your underwear right too otherwise your clothes will not sit well. You need a good fitting bra and if the dress is fitted you need to wear full knickers so you get a smooth look. Wearing clothes to tight can make you look bigger than you are and as you say if a skirt is too tight it will bunch and crease. If you need any help do please get in touch
