I wanted to share with you a shopping experience that I had today at JoJo Blue in Danbury. This is a small independent boutique. After seeing her post on Facebook showing a beautiful array of colours in store. I was not looking to buy anything but found the perfect dress.

For those of you who know me, I do love to shop, but I also love to play at the shops as my Trainer would say. As a Colour and Style coach it is nice to find new places to shop that sell more individual items and not racks of the same thing in very colour and size. A friend had taken me to JoJo Blue before but was keen to see her new spring stock after seeing her Facebook post. The purpose of the trip was to introduce my friend to the store and just have a browse.

It’s always when you are not looking to buy anything, that you find the perfect item. There was another customer in the store who tried on a dress that I would not have picked up. It was a blue floral dress and when she put on a wide belt it looked lovely. Jo suggested that she try on a longer version of a similar dress that looked even nicer. She teamed the dress with a black leather biker jacket and was going to wear with her Mary Poppins shoes. The lady was a very happy customer who left the shop with something she may not have tried on herself. You can view this dress on her Facebook page.

This sent me looking through the racks again and I found a similar dress to the first one she tried but in a plain colour. I would usually go for a bright colour like red or orange, but this dress was in a Khaki Green. Normally my clothes are very much fitted, and this dress is not. So, When I came out of the fitting room with the dress on and got an overwhelming YES from the ladies in the shop, I was surprised. To get a different look I put a belt around the middle for a more fitted look. As it was cold today, I was wearing thick black tight and knee-high boots, but short boots or pumps would work too. When the weather gets warmer, I can wear trainers or sandals.

Most people go to the same shops they have always gone to and buy the same as they have always bought. We are all creatures of habit and like to stay in our own comfort zone. Experiment and try on different things, that you may not have tried before. You might surprise yourself. Doing this for my clients is easy but when I am buying for myself, I tend to stay safe.

I guess the moral of the tale is not to be too blinkered about what you are looking for. Be open to suggestions and happy to try on different things. If you visit Jo at JoJo Blue, you can be sure she will be able to offer some suggestions. Her shop is like an Aladdin’s Cave with clothes jewellery and accessories. I went into the store not looking for anything and came out with a dress that is not something I would normally have chosen.
