I meet so many clients who just love wearing black and when I ask the question “Why do you like wearing black so much?” These are the usual answers that I get.
- I don’t know which colours would suit me best.
- Black is a safe colour
- Black goes with everything
- I don’t want to stand out
- Black is slimming
Here are my tips on how to move away from always wearing black.
How can I change from wearing black to choosing colour?
Firstly, I would like to say that black and white in my book are not colours. They are at either end of the spectrum and have the least amount of colour in the mixing pot. However, for some ladies’ black is a colour that you can wear next to your face but for most, it is best to keep it away from your face and wear as a trouser or skirt instead. When I ask the question “why do you choose to wear black these are some of the answers”.
I don’t know what colours suit me – This is the main reason clients stick to black as they are not aware of other options available to them.
Black is a safe colour – For some people they can hide behind the colour. Wearing the little black dress is a safe option if you don’t know what to wear for an occasion.
Black goes with everything – Yes it does but there are also a lot of other base colours that could work for you too.
I don’t want to stand out – This is very common people feel that by wearing a black they will blend in but it does not necessary bring out the best in you.
Black is slimming – Yes black can have the look of slimming down your figure but so do all dark colours.
How can I change from wearing black to choosing colour?
Black to me is a very negative colour which drains your energy which is reason enough not to want to wear it. I love the vibrant colours of Red and Orange as they give you energy which I enjoy wearing. If you don’t want to wear them in your clothes you can wear the colour in your underwear or socks. Each colour has their own healing properties and can be worn for those reasons, but most people wear a colour that they like and resonate with.

What other colours could I wear instead of black?
Here is an array of beautiful colours both cool and warm tones. Why would you not want to embrace colour?
Navy Blue is a very good alternative to black and it is more forgiving. It is a good base colour that can be teamed with most colours and can be worn summer or winter.
Grey There are all shades of grey some warm and some cool, but they make a great alternative to black. In the summer you can go for a pale shade and in the winter a nice slate grey. A top tip “If you have let your hair go naturally grey make sure that you don’t wear all grey. You will need to add some colour with it”
Camel/Stone/Beige All the neutral shades for warm toned ladies including Khaki, Aubergine, & Rust make great base colours
Forest Green For the cool ladies the darkest green, Royal Blue, & Purple
All these I would call you base colours, trousers, jeans, skirts, jackets, suits and coats.

Your WOW colours are the colours that best go with your skin tone. These would be the pop of colour in your outfit that you wear with your basic colours above. Or, if you are brave would wear in a dress if you wanted too.
Wearing the right colours will enhance your natural looks
- A healthier more youthful glow without the need for too much makeup.
- More definition to face shapes and slim body lines.
- A lively look to the entire face, brightening our eyes and giving our skin a glowing appearance.
- An inner confidence knowing that you look and feel your best version of you.
Why would you not want to do that? Ditch the black and find the colours to suit you.
