What everybody ought to know about self-care

There seems to be so much out there these days about self care? What are they all talking about? Here is my take on what everybody ought to know about self-care

When you are flying and the hostess is giving the safety talk, they always advice that you should put the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting your child. This I always thought was strange, as I was taught to think of others before myself. BUT how can you support others if you are not in a good place yourself.

What everybody ought to know about self-care

We live in a very busy society, everyone is always rushing around trying to get everything done workwise. Those of us with children spending the weekends running them to their activities and the household chores, there is very little time for ourselves. As women, we are usually at the bottom of the pile for “Me time”. and we need to address that. If you are always very tired and stressed you will have very little to give anyone else. It is so important to look after yourself. So how do you do that?

Mindfulness / Meditation

There is so much talk about mindfulness and meditation which I understand is not for everyone, but sitting quietly for 10-15 minutes a day is so good for you. This is when all your ideas will pop into your head. Take some long breaths in and out and calm your mind and you will feel so much better afterwards. I have heard people talking about this but until I started doing it myself I didn’t realise the benefits.

Fuel the body

Eat well we all know what we are should to be eating. Exercise reguarly, it is important to find an exercise you enjoy so it is not a chore. Have a gym buddie, someone who you are accountable too.

Treat yourself to “Me time”

Find time to do what you enjoy, whatever that might be and don’t feel guilty for that time away from work or the kids. I start my day by walking my dog every morning and it is so nice to be in touch with nature, getting some fresh air and collecting my thoughts before I start my day.

Invest in yourself

This might be a course that you want to do, a new learning, time out with your girlfriends, just sitting and reading a book or watching your favourite television program, or whatever that lights you up. Happiness is a choice, choose to be happy and start by doing something you enjoy.

Look after your appearance

Have your hair cut regularly, keep yourself looking good. Be aware of what you are wearing, do your clothes suit you and your image? Do they flatter your body shape? Are you wearing the right colours to bring out the best in you? Which colours will give you the most energy? Which colours will deplete your energy? What we are looking for here is to be the best version of you and to do that you do need to invest time and money in yourself. You then in turn will have more to give to other members of your family.
