Everywhere you look there is talk about setting your goals for 2019. New Year New You!! So where do you start? What areas of your life need decluttering? Well must start somewhere and so for me New Year New You – Lets start by decluttering your wardrobe.

New Year New You – Let’s start by decluttering your wardrobe

We all have our own way of keeping our house tidy, some people are very organised and tidy whilst others are not and stuff things in draws so they are overflowing. Either way we all accumulate a lot of stuff!! and need to weed through it on a regular basis. This goes for our wardrobes as well. We all love going out and buying new clothes, but do we let go of something at the same time. If you buy a new pair of black trousers do you let an old pair go? Let’s face it how many pairs of black trousers does a girl need?

Start by emptying the wardrobe and do this a section at a time. Have a good look at what you have, you may find that you have several pairs of jeans for arguments sake, do you need to keep all of them? You only need one pair to walk the dog in. Once your wardrobe has been organised you will be able to see at a glance what you have and then you will know what you need to buy and or replace.  Don’t keep clothes that you can no longer fit into hoping that you will one day. If you do lose some weight then you will want to buy yourself some new items. If you have lost weight, and your clothes are now too big for you, sort out anything that is worth taking to a tailor to amend for you.

Sort into piles

  • Rubbish – clothes that are worn out and not worth re-cycling
  • Charity Shop
  • Sell or pass on
  • Keep

Now what you need to ask yourself

  • Do you love it?
  • Does it fit me?
  • Does it make me feel good?
  • Is it in a colour and style to suit me?
  • Do I look and feel great in it?

If you answer No to any of these questions, then it must go. If you have an emotional attachment to something and you really can’t let it go, then perhaps pack it away in a box and re- look in six months’ time and see how you feel then.  It is good to work on a one in one out basis and regularly cull your wardrobe every season.  Anything that you have not worn for a year you should question.  There are lots of ways to re-cycle your clothes and if you have any nearly new or designer clothes that you feel are too good for your charity shop why not try selling on eBay, Facebook and other sales sites and this will then give you some cash to reinvest in some new items. Sometimes it is a good idea to have a friend with you when you do this to give you an honest opinion. This whole process is very therapeutic, not only will you have a streamlined wardrobe, it will be easier to put together different outfit combinations as you will be able to see what you have.

Look for some new storage ideas

I like to store my clothes by colour and store like with like.  Jumpers and t/shirts are best stored folded flat to save that poke on the top of the sleeve and shoes in boxes.  If you have a look on my Pinterest storage board there are some great storage ideas on there.  You can put hooks on the wall for all your costume jewellery and dividers in your drawers for your underwear.  I have clear shoe boxes for all my shoes stacked up in my wardrobe, so I can see what is inside. This way you can see at a glance what you have.

Have fun putting together different outfits

One idea I suggest to my busy clients is to put their work outfits together in the wardrobe. The dress on a hanger with the jacket or cardigan hanging over the top with also the necklace or scarf you are going to wear with it.  This makes dressing so easy in the mornings and you never have that debate as to what you are going to wear that day. It is a good idea to put out the outfit from tomorrow the night before to save time in the morning.

Try decluttering the rest of the house

Why stop here? Take a room at a time, perhaps try your office next and file away all loose papers. It does make life easier if you have everything to hand. Check out storage ideas for here too as they can make a huge difference, if you can put everything away.
