Do you know all the items that you have in your wardrobe? I guess you don’t. Some items get pushed to the back and forgotten for many reasons. You may be like me and put away the season we are not wearing and bring them out again. Many items may get lost along the way. You may go up and down in weight and have several wardrobes in one. So, let’s find some hidden gems in your own wardrobe.

What do I mean by find some hidden gems? We all have our favourite outfits that we wear again and again.  But have you tried to put different outfits together? Perhaps you buy something new, like a skirt and you choose something new to wear with it. This is before you check to see if you already have something in your wardrobe that would look lovely with it.  Now let’s be honest, we have all done that at some time. I really do try to only buy something that I know I have some piece of clothing that I will be able to wear with it.

The truth is I think that we all have too many clothes in our wardrobes. We can’t see what we do have and therefore we wear the same 20% of our wardrobe most of the time. The remaining 80% remains unworn most of the time. So, what should we do about it? Would you like to be able to see what you do have in your wardrobe? Be able to make more outfits with less clothes and choose an outfit to wear each morning with ease? Then perhaps you should detox your wardrobe.

I can feel a wardrobe detox coming on.

I have previously written several blogs on how to detox your wardrobe if you would like to refer to one of those.  Click here.   I am not talking about a total clear out as I am assuming that you are already doing that twice a year. What I am suggesting is that you regularly look through your wardrobe to see what you do have, particularly before you buy something new. When I buy something new, I look to see if I can replace this with something I already have that may look worn or no longer fits. I try to work on a one in one out philosophy.

How many pairs of black trousers does a girl need?

Exactly, when you replace an item that is worn or does not fit it must go. There is no point clogging up your wardrobe with items that you are not going to wear. The same goes for buying in the sales, unless it is something that you know you are going to wear, and you have something to wear it with and it is going to be a wearable item in your wardrobe. Remember we want a wardrobe full of clothes that we love, love wearing, and know we look fantastic in.

Break your wardrobe down into sections and attack one section at time. Start with say a chest of drawers and do one drawer at time and look through what you have. You will be surprised; you will come across things you had forgotten you had. If you still want to wear this item think about what you can wear with it. I have found things I had forgotten I had and then put them with something else and made a new outfit. Style it up with some accessories, perhaps a scarf or piece of jewellery and you have a new outfit. It will feel like you are wearing something new.

Its all too easy to go shopping to buy something new, a bit of retail therapy is always good and makes us feel nice. That is all well and good if you are going to get good wear out of the item. If after taking it home and you try it on, if it does not make you look and feel fantastic it must go back. Try shopping in your own wardrobe and find new ways to style what you already have. Sometimes this is fun if you invite a friend round and do this together. Another pair of eyes and another way of looking at things she will be able to offer alternatives for you.
