Do you really know what you have in your wardrobe?

Do you really know what you have in your wardrobe?

This is not a trick question. Some people have so much in their wardrobe that they can’t see what they do have. Have you ever bought something new and go home only to find you already have something very similar if not identical in your wardrobe? I am sure we have all done that at some time. So, I am suggesting that it is a good idea each season to go through what you do have and what you no longer need to keep. My question to you is do you really know what you have in your wardrobe?

Now that the cooler weather is here it is time to get out your winter clothes before you start buying new ones. Walking around the shops I have seen some nice jumpers and have been tempted to buy. I know what I need to do, is get out the ones I had last year and see if which need replacing. It helps to not wash your jumpers any more than I you need to as it helps prolong the life of them. After time they do get that washed out look. Acrylic fabrics seem to bobble, and others just shrink.

If you talk about de-cluttering it sends people into a spin and they think it’s a big job, and therefore they put it off. Start with one drawer/cupboard which is achievable and you will see results straight away. You can work through your wardrobe a bit at a time and receive great results.

Start looking at what you do have.

  • Start by getting rid of anything that is past its sell by date and looks worn.
  • take out anything that you have not worn in the last year
  • remove anything that no longer fits you
  • anything in a colour or style that you no longer think suits you, or you wear

When you have done that you can now see what you do have.  You might be surprised in what you find, things that you had forgotten that you had. Look at what you have removed and decide which bag they should go into. Some things you may not be able to get rid of because of an emotional attachment too. If that’s the case, you can pack them away and if in six months’ time you have not missed it you then maybe able to let them go.

  • Rubbish
  • To be sold

What do you do with what you have left?

Now you will be able to see what you have and what gaps there are. This is a much better way to shop going out to replace an item you need. What we are looking to do here is to build a wardrobe of clothes that we love and love wearing. When I have done this exercise in the past and looked at what I am shedding they are often things that I had bought in the sales because they were a bargain. (They are not a bargain if you are not going to wear them). Sometimes, I have just had them so long, and my style has changed as I have got older. The classic items you can keep for many years, but the high fashion pieces have a shorter life. Therefore, I am happy to pay more for an investment piece that I know will be in my wardrobe for many years to come. The odd high fashion items I don’t like to pay too much for as I know they won’t stand the test of time.

Work your way through your whole wardrobe a bite size pieces and this makes it manageable. When you do this regularly the job will get easier each time. It is so rewarding to be able to see what you have at a glance. It makes choosing and putting outfits together so much easier as you can see what you have.
