Although we can all wear most colours, it is the intensity and undertone of the colour that counts. Red is very much considered a Christmas colour but of course it can be worn any time of the year. Anyone who knows me will confirm without doubt, red is one of my favourite colours. Why? Because I know which red suits me and also I love the energy and power that wearing red gives me. So, in answer to the question Is Red a Colour everyone can wear? the answer is YES.
Warm Red
If you have a warm skin tone you need to wear a warm red and you can identify this as a red with a yellow undertone. I often describe this as an orangy red which is a bright vibrant colour like this lovely blouse.
Cool Red
If you have a cool skin tone you need to wear a cool red and you can identify this as a red with a blue undertone. I often describe this as a raspberry red which is a dark red. Loving this seductive dark red dress from Next.
Warm or Cool?
A very simple rule to bear in mind when you are shopping is whether the shade is warm or cool. If you try both options, cool red and then warm red, you will see the difference very clearly. Try one shade and look at the effect it has on your skin. Does it bring it alive, make your eyes sparkle and your skin glow? Does it even out your skin tone? Or does the colour make you look washed out, tired, dull and generally unwell?
Next, give your body a litle time to absorb the colour, your skin will give you the answer and you will know which red is best for you.
If you want to turn down the dimmer switch, because not everyone likes to wear that high level of colour, that is also fine, pink is just a watered down red. Another option is to wear red as an accessory. Try a red handbag or a pair of red shoes, and as they are not next to your skin you don’t have to worry too much if they are the right red. However, a necklace or scarf, if you are wearing them next to your face, must be the right shade of red for you.
Red is an energetic Colour
Another reason to wear red is that it is the colour of energy, power, passion and action, and will give you a positive, energetic effect. Whereas black, which is a negative colour, and an energy blocker will absorb and deplete your energy. As a woman running my own business, I love the way colour makes me feel. If I wear all grey, I feel all grey. Just don’t wear red when you want to relax and chill after a long day, you will need to change into a more soothing colour to unwind.
So, in answer to my question Is Red a Colour everyone can wear? the answer is very much YES but take care to wear the right red. Here are some ideas as to which colours to wear with each red.
Wear the right red and see the woman – wear the wrong red and see the suit.
