Underwear is something that often gets overlooked and yet it is so fundamentally important.  It is the foundation garment for all your clothes. These days underwear does not have to be boring as there are so many beautifull colours to choose from. Sometimes, we do need to wear neutral colours because of the clothes we are wearing on top but for others we can wear the bright colours. Here are a few tips showing how underwear can enhance the look for your outfit.

Bra’s

There is so much choice and sometimes that is the problem, but there is also a lot of help available.  I advise my clients to go and have a bra consultation regularly, you can do this in Marks & Spencer, or your local department store. Alternatively, if you would prefer a more personal service, I can recommend a lady who works from home and she will also travel to you.  Depending on your size and shape you will be advised which styles are suitable for offering the right type of support and comfort.

I don’t claim to be an expert in this area of dressing but I do know how important it is to get it right. Gone are the days when you could have one or two bras in your wardrobe. You need a nice smoothed cup bra for under close-fitting garments, perhaps an uplifting bra to wear in open neck tops and a strapless bra for those tops and dresses with different straps. Try to wear a similar colour to the  garment, nothing looks worse than a white top with a black bra underneath.  I never understand why people wear the bra straps showing with a vest top either. Perhaps I am getting old!!

Knickers

These are so important to get right, and more often, I think, people buy the wrong size.  Wearing them too tight, not only makes marks on your skin but it causes the flesh to hang over the top.  Go for a larger size and the overall effect is much better. If you wear the foundation pants with extra support to hold it all in, you will definatlely, need a larger size otherwise, you may find the muffin top spills out over the top.  Personally, I think you are better just wearing a full pant with light support, this will hide the knicker line and give a smoother look.

I know that some ladies like to wear thongs. If you do, please make sure they do not show through what you are wearing and that when you bend over they do not come out of the top of your trousers. This is not a good look.

Slips

When I thought of slips, I would think of my grandma, but I think she knew something, some of us don’t.  If you are wearing a close fitting dress, a full slip will iron out all the lumps and bumps.  Alternatively, you can try a half-slip, if wearing a skirt. In Marks & Spencer they come in lots of different lengths so you are sure to find one to suit.

It is important to get the underwear right, you can pay a fortune for a dress but if you don’t have the correct under garments it will not look good.
