I was told by my Colour & Style trainer that petite ladies were the hardest to dress as there is not much choice out there in the shops. I have looked around and found these retailers that hold a petite range and I am sure there will be many more. This dress I have found here is from Wallis and is a Navy Polka Dot Flute Hem Dress which was £45 and has been reduced to £31.50  Here are my top fashion tips for petite ladies made easy.

All these retailers do a petite range.

  • Wallis
  • Precis
  • Top Shop
  • Next
  • Dorothy Perkins
  • Very (on line catalogue)
  • boohoo.com
  • asos.com

For those that know me, know, that I am tall and slim and always wanted to be small and petite. I guess we all want to be something different to what we are. But why? We should be happy in our skin and learn to love our bodies. We can learn how to dress for our own body shape to make the most of what we have.

I think the most important thing when dressing a petite lady is to get the proportions correct. The easiest way to do that is to buy from one of the petite ranges. This way you will find the leg lengths right for you, the waist will be in the correct place and all the proportions will be correct. Other stores you will find will stock shorter leg lengths if nothing else.

Trousers

If you can’t get the correct length in your jeans you turn them up at the bottom on the outside as this is a good look at the moment. If you need to turn up other trousers use wonder web as you can iron this on and makes it a lot easier to do. Just remember not to end the hem of the trousers on the widest part of your leg.

Skirts

If you have short legs it is a good idea to wear the same colour shoes and tights as the colour of your skirt hemline and show enough of your leg to balance out the body. Take care with the midi length as it can make you look shorter than you are.

  • Choose designs that give you height
  • Wear block colouring with a contrasting top
  • Shoe colour should match the colour of your skirt or trousers
  • Choose floral patterns with a small design
  • Fitted clothing works well
  • Accessories should be small

Things to avoid

  • Oversized hand bags which will drown your frame
  • Heavy fabrics
  • Wide leg trousers
  • Large designs
  • Lots of gathers on the waist which will add bulk
