My tips on how to dress for a business meeting

This is a big question for so many people, what is expected from me, what should I wear for a business meeting? Here are my tips on how to dress for a business meeting.

When I worked in the City many years ago, wearing a suit, or skirt and jacket was what you did. It was a bit like a City uniform. I was recruiting for the City Banks and meeting my clients and it was what was expected. Now days they have dress down Friday and I think that the dress code has moved on from there. If you went into the West End is was very different, here were different industries. So, I guess what I am trying to say is, it does depend on the industry you work in as to the dress code.

Should I wear a suit?

This is a communally asked question and my reply would be, do you have a suit? and would you feel comfortable and happy wearing one. There is no point wearing a suit if it makes you feel uncomfortable as it will show. Also, if it is not your personality to wear one, it is not showing you to your best advantage. We all know that in the first 30 seconds of someone meeting you, they will have made an impression of you. People will remember you for what you are wearing too.

If you are a Beautician, or therapist I would suggest that you go in your uniform. Invariably you will be going to a business meeting during your working day so it is quite acceptable to do so. If you are running your own business and have your own company shirt with a logo that too is perfectly acceptable, as people will instantly recognise you.

What I would suggest is that you choose something that you know will give you confidence. My favourite colours are Red and Orange and they are both very energetic colours which will give me energy. I have a favourite orange dress that I call my lucky dress as I always get nice comments when I wear it. If I am going somewhere I have not been to before, or to do a talk, I often choose to wear it. I might still be apprehensive walking into those environments but I need to know that I am looking my best. (After all this is my business)

As people remember you for what you are wearing, make sure it is in a colour that is flattering to you and a style that brings out your best features. I would always suggest that you avoid wearing black as sometimes it can make you unapproachable and it will certainly deplete your energy.

People by people and it is also essential to let your personality come across at a business meeting. If you choose to wear a plain classic dress, then add a nice piece of jewellery, or a scarf, team it up with a coloured cardigan, shrug or jacket. You may be able to add a belt to the dress, a nice pair of shoes and hand bag. (The shoes and hand bag don’t have to match). It’s about putting a whole outfit together that you feel comfortable in. If you know that you look good on the outside it, will make you feel good on the inside which, will project to those you meet.

To sum up

Wear something that you love, that you know you look good in from the many comments you have had in the past. This will give you the confidence that you need. The most important thing is to SMILE this will make you approachable, everyone likes a friendly face. We all know about the law of attraction, if you are looking confident and are passionate about what you do, it will show in your face and your eyes will light up. Add this to a positive attitude and you can’t go wrong.

  1. Great advice Sandra to wear something you love.. important to feel comfortable and happy in your own skin!

    1. Yes Rosemary, I have seen so many ladies particularly at networking events who feel they should wear a suit but obviously are not comfortable and often they are nervous enough anyway. They would feel so much better if they wore something that they loved and knew that they looked good in. This would give them so much more confidence.
