The summer sales seem to start earlier and earlier each year.  They seemed to start at the beginning of June and most of us have not even had our summer holidays.  I think retailers use this time to clear their stock before introducing more summer lines. So, how do we use these sales to our advantage and not end up with a wardrobe of clothes that we don’t wear.  Here are my tips how to make the sales work for you.

How do we not get carried away buying clothes in the sale just because they are cheap? It’s a bargain right? No, it is not a bargain, if it is not something you need, love and know you are going to wear it lots.

Some sales are very genuine with items that have been reduced as stock that has not sold.  I love the Next Sale for that reason, as they have good reductions. They could be odd sizes, end of lines and have genuine reductions.  Others are items that for whatever reason have not sold. If there is a rack of the same item in all sizes that is a sure sign there is something not right about it. It could just be the just be the cut but there is a reason why none of the sizes has sold. That’s why they are in the sale!

Sometimes you will find that one colour may goes in the sale. It may be a colour that has not been popular.  My advice is to try on, it could be the cut, the fabric, or the colour. I always buy and take the item home. Try on at home with what I am going to wear it with. If you need to buy something else to wear with it, it’s not a bargain.

Now we all love a bargain, but it’s not a bargain if it sits in your wardrobe with the tags on and never worn. I ask myself ; would I buy it at the full price if I could afford it?  You should only buy an item after asking yourself these questions.

  • Do I need it?
  • Can I afford it?
  • Do I love it?
  • Is it in one of your best colours?
  • Is it in a style that flatters my figure?
  • Does it make me look and feel fantastic?

Before even going shopping in the sales write yourself a list of what you need in your wardrobe to fill any gaps you have. You may need to replace a pair of trousers, or you may be looking for a dress to wear for an occasion. Go with a purpose and try not to deviate from that.

Here are a pair of Capri Pants that I bought in the Next sale this weekend. I consider these a bargain as they were reduced from £28.00  to £14.00. I love the colour, they fit well and are very flattering, I have lots of things in my wardrobe that will go with them. Did I need them? probably not, but I will throw out an older pair in my wardrobe to compensate. You can always be a rule breaker, but jut beware that you are buying something that will be an asset to your wardrobe and complement what you already own.

Sometimes when you buy in sales, you can’t return for a full refund but only a credit note.  The return period is often a lot shorter (two weeks), so it is important to decide if you are going to keep the item or return it in the required time. Make sure it is something that will be an asset to your wardrobe and something that you love and are going to love wearing.
