Are you ever too old to wear denim?

Are you ever too old to wear denim? No, I don’t think so. It is all about dressing with your style in mind. I was in my local John Lewis and their manikins were dressed in denim. Personally, I would not wear denim dungarees as they are not my thing. I think they are more suited for  a younger women. (I am (63yrs) but some ladies I know could rock it. Styled with some white trainers and a t/shirt underneath.

The denim shorts for me would depend on how you thought about wearing them. I have good legs and have a couple pairs of denim shorts and wear them a lot. In the first lockdown we did so much walking and the weather was so nice and so I did not wear anything else. If you do not want to show too much leg? how about choosing knee length ones? Pedal pushers which finish just over the knee, 7/8th trousers and then of course jeans, which there are many shapes to choose from.

In this picture we have a long-sleeved denim dress with tiers which are on trend now. Denim can be a thick material so with this one you could be adding a lot of bulk with all the gathers unless it is a fine material. I think that anyone can wear a denim dress but take care choosing the right style to suit your body shape and personality.

The drawstring denim trousers could be worn by any age. The wide leg is very flattering, and the drawstring give them a causal appeal and I am sure they will be very comfortable. For the more mature lady I would suggest a longer top, a younger lady would rock a crop top.

It is all in the styling of the denim.

Denim is a good base colour and so many colours look great with it. I love to wear bright red and orange with denim but really any colour will work with it. I love to wear my favourite shade of bright green. Remember the saying “blue and green should never be seen unless there is a colour in between” That is not the case now and green goes so well with all shades of blue.

Add some bright accessories

  • A bright coloured belt.
  • A scarf through the belt loops of your jeans.
  • Try adding a scarf in the neck.
  • Coloured shoes or handbag.
  • Bright coloured jewellery.

A denim jacket is a wardrobe staple

I don’t think you are ever too old to wear a denim jacket whatever the style. They are so versatile and can be worn in so many ways. over a dress, with a skirt, trousers and even jeans. (Double denim is ok) They are also versatile if you choose one in a colour too.

The classic denim shirt

This is another wardrobe staple and can be worn is so many ways

  • Casually open neck and cuffs turned back.
  • Buttoned up and tucked into a skirt.
  • Tied at the waist.
  • Worn unbuttoned and open over a vest top or t/shirt.
  • A front tuck only.

Are you ever too old to wear denim?

So, in answer to this question, in my mind the answer is you are never too old to wear denim, it is just choosing the correct style for you. For me it is all in the styling and what you put with it.
